Eternal thanks to our children, families, and friends for bestowing upon me eight of the most enchanting years of my life! Mary Silveira Principal update
Many thanks to the collaborative efforts team of our certificated and classified staff, our parent team, and district office folks who participated in the interview on Thursday, June 7th. Several fantastic candidates were carefully reviewed. This team put a lot of time and effort into the search. Many thanks are extended to Dr. Yamashiro for his efforts at making sure we did this thoughtfully and with the input and combined efforts of staff and community.
Stay tuned for an update early this week!

2017-2018 Wendy Blanton Kindness Award Recipiants (See photo left)
Our Awards assembly on Friday was lovely. Of the many awards shared, one of the most compelling was the Wendy Blanton Kindness Award (See photo below). This award is new this year and was bestowed upon one graduating girl and boy for their consistent kindness at Mary Silveira. This was a challenging award to pass out and trust me when I share with you that we were considering the entire 5th grade class this year. There are just to many students who deserve this.
That being said please help me welcome our two selections for this year's 2017-2018 Wendy Blanton Kindness Award: Anne Hamel and Bryce Keene! Both were provided their own personal plaques and will also have their name on a plaque that will remain in the office for the next several years to come with names added each year. Congratulations to both of them!
Beauty and the Beast play was a HIT!!!
First, can I get an emphatic applause for Ed Malaret and Tara Costello, our co-directors, for their exceptional work on both of our 2017-2018 school plays this year. I have always been and remain forever a fan of this aspect of learning. Their effort, the hours they out into this program, and the care they have shown their children from start to end, was praiseworthy!
Additional thanks to our numerous parent volunteers for the time they provided at rehearsals and activities they supported along the way. It is not easy wrangling all of that energy and keeping it focused on the prize.
And yes, OUR CHILDREN! WOW! This was truly an amazing performance. Our students projected their voices and brought their energy and passion for the stage. Moreover, they did not just remember their lines...they became the characters they portrayed. That is the goal in the end, right? Don't memorize your lines, rather, be the character and the lines will come to you (I still remember those days when Sam Shepard taught our drama classes at Tam High School). Our Silveira students were truly impressive and amazing!
5th Grade Promotion (See screen shot right)
Hard to put into words...I knew them when they were Kindergarten children stumbling over themselves bumping into one another in the K yard, riding tricycles, playing basketball, crying when they were accidentally knocked over, running around the play structure, meandering about around with their tiny lunchboxes, learning to share and build friendships, etc. It is another one of those bittersweet adventures, to watch them grow, leave their impression, and then move away from us to continue their educational journey.
Promotion Logistics: 8:30-9:30am, doors open at 8:05, Marinwood Pool Party, 10:00-1:00, please pick your children up at the pool by 1:00pm.
Many thanks to the parent promotion team for their efforts and support of all of our 5th grade children! Their work in preparing this event is appreciated!
Memory Book update
Memory Books were passed out Friday afternoon. Students are more than welcome to bring them in throughout the week for friends to sign but please please please I implore you to have them write their name inside. Do it for them if possible. Easy, quick, and will make a difference. TRUST ME!
On Monday morning, June 11th, we are selling the remaining books for $30 each in the fonrt office area. Limit 1 per family. We only have around 20 or so and when we sell out, we will be out.
Mary Silveira is undergoing construction over summer - Last day for campus access for all students, staff, and community, is Friday, June 15th
There will be no access to the site during the summer months and while there are always questions related to time lines as relates to construction projects, we have every reason to be optimistic about s smooth transition into the 2018 school year with classrooms prepared for our incoming students in August. The construction team was vetted carefully and have been highly communicative with our team from the start of the process.
Here are a few of the projects they will be working on over the summer and what you will expect to see when school begins:
- Middle Courtyard: Reconfigured layout supporting easier access and upgraded drainage, improved seating in the grade 1-5 lunch area as well as replacing the old lunch seating with new tables. All will be ADA accessible. This will add practical value as well as curbside appeal.
- Library Rebuild: Pulling everything out and rebuilding the infrastructure including new layout, paint, flooring, lighting, Audio/Visual upgrades, window treatments, and potential skylights.
- Modernized Classrooms: Ceilings, lighting, Audio/Visual upgrades, insulation, flooring, signage, interior walls w/ and upgraded tack boards (Note this is not for the portables)
- Bathrooms: Bathroom closet in kindergarten, reconfigure bathrooms for accessibility in Admin, accessible upgrades to bathrooms as needed.
- Kindergarten Classrooms (Ms. Lum and Mrs. Franklin's room): Adding a new interior Kindergarten wall between room 8-9 (replacing the old one currently in place)
