4th and 5th grade CAASPP Testing begins Monday
I have included 6 important suggestions and reminders to help your child find personal success with this test:
1. Eat a healthy dinner the night before
2. Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of each test
3. Get to bed early each night
4. Arrive to school on time
5. Do not plan to be absent during this week
6. Remind your children to do their best
All students in grades 3-5 will be tested in 2 key core areas of learning, Language Arts and Mathematics. The entire exam is administered on Chromebooks (thank you to our Family Giving Campaign contributing parents and those who plan to contribute soon!). 5th grade students will have an additional Science exam called the CAST (California Science Test). This is the pilot year for this online exam.
There are a few components to the CAASPP test including selected response items (choosing one or more answers), editing, drawing, and written response items, as well as a culminating Performance Task. Students have been preparing for these activities over the last several weeks through interim tests designed to familiarize themselves with the navigation of the site as well as the types of questions they might be asked.
Remember, this exam is only one indicator of what our children understand and only one format for demonstrating that understanding. We are also keenly aware that there are children who test well and those who struggle with certain testing environments. We ask that they remember our Life Skills and do their best and nothing more.
- 4th and 5th Grade: April 30th-May 4th (1 week)
- 3rd Grade: May 14th-May 18th (1 week)
Two very supportive parent links:
- Parent Guide to the test: This informational packet will provide you with everything you need to know about the test
- Practice Tests: Click the Student Interface, Click sign in, Select grade and click yes, choose one of the pink optional tests at the top, click select on settings, Click yes for "is this you", and you are good to go. These are not the actual questions but they are the types of questions your children will see. Our students have had a few opportunuities with this in classrooms.
Marty Silveira is undergoing construction over summer - Last day for campus access is June 15th
Below is the work we are preparing for over the summer. There will be no access to the building during rthe summer months and while we should be ready to go at the start of the year, we are planning for a possible spill ovcer into the year. All good as our staff will prepare for a smooth start. More to come related to our annual "Meet Teacher" event just prior to the start of the year. See below for much of the work we are doing.
Middle Courtyard: Reconfigured layout supporting easier access and upgraded drainage, improved seating in the lunch area. This is the area where grade 1-5 students eat lunch. Front of the library.
Library Rebuild: Pulling everything out and rebuilding the infrastructure including new layout, paint, flooring, lighting, Audio/Visual upgrades, window treatments, and potential skylights.
Modernized Classrooms: Ceilings, lighting, Audio/Visual upgrades, insulation, flooring, signage, interior walls w/ and upgraded tack boards
Bathrooms: Bathroom closet in kindergarten, reconfigure bathrooms for accessibility in Admin, accessible upgrades to bathrooms as needed.
Kindergarten Classrooms (Ms. Lum and Mrs. Franklin's room): Adding wall in the center of kindergarten to divide the space.
Fire alarms, phones, and intercom system upgrades.
Wait Until 8th - May 9th Meeting Date, 8:20am, front of or inside MPR depending upon our numbers
What is this meeting about: Are you wondering if you should purchase a new iPhone for your son or daughter? Perhaps you are curious when the "right" age is to provide one for them? Maybe you're feeling a little pressure from your child to purchase a smartphone because their friends have one? And then again, maybe your child already has one and you are experiencing a few challenges related to how she/he is acting or feeling towards you, others, or themselves?
When is the meeting: May 9th, 8:20, in front of the MPR with tea and snacks
Who is invited: Anyone who wants to come by and talk about the Pledge and about how devices may be inpacting their children.
Is this a school sponsored event: No, this is not related to any Mary Silveira School programs and this is not something teachers are discussing. It is a parent forum, which I will be attending as a father and sharing my concerns and strategies as well.
Guest Author visit - Grade 1-5 - Last week for our coin drive
On Wednesday morning our students and staff were graced with the presence of one of the most amazing authors and story tellers, Deng Ajak Jongkuch, the Lost Boy of Sudan. Several of our students shared that this was one of the most moving assemblies they have experienced! His true story of courage and perseverance astounded us.
Deng has written a children's book entitled: "A Story of Hope: the Journey of a Lost Boy of Sudan" that can be purchased here on Amazon.
More amazing is that all proceeds from his book go to the organization Impact a Village, which he helped found that supports the rebuilding of devestated schools while providing fresh water to villages in need around the globe. His mission is truly astounding, beautiful, sad, and inspiring.
Here is a clip from a newscast an interview.
Finally, for the next few weeks we are holding a coin drive in the office to support his program. Any loose change is appreciated and goes to supporting his mission! The change jar will be located in the front office.
