5,000 Acts of Kindness Challenge
Our Kindness challenge has concluded and the total number of acts of Kindness has been counted. Mary Silveira hit the 5,000 mark with close to 5,200 acts noted in student journals! I am very proud of our students for their work ethic and dedication to building a more caring learning environment! A video will be coming to us soon that I will share with all of you
What a fantastic K-2 Music Production!
For those parents who came by our Winter Music Performance on Wednesday, thank you for your energy. Our children worked really hard to learn those songs. What you are not able to see is our K-2 Music Teacher, Mr. Edwards, developing our children's understanding of the fundamentals of music such as notes, tempos, timing, and the various musical instruments and sounds they make.
One of his instructional activities in 2nd grade, which was really educational for our children and lots of fun, is identifying musical instruments within a song. He starts by laying down pictures of various musical instruments, then passing bing bags to students, then playing a piece of music, and finally, challenging students to think about what they are hearing. Then they would toss the bing bag onto the picture of the instrument they think they are hearing. Super fun with children working together to figure it out! Lots of laughter and fun while learning.
Activities such as this, and so much more, are what your Can Do Family Giving Campaign supports. If you have not made a payment please feel free to click here. Remember, if you cannont make the full $600 payment, pay what you can with no questions attached. Our goal is to have everyone participate in whatever way they are able. THANK YOU!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
We so appreciate all of you who helped fill our Marin Food Drive Buckets this year. They were overflowing with much needed food and metaphorically speaking, with kindness! Our little community in the valley is helping members within and outside of our community, one action at a time.
School Play - "Scrooge"
Congratulations to our numerous student performers who participated in our school play this winter! Fantastic production. Many thanks to our parent support team as well as Mrs. Costello and Mr. Malaret, our lead production team. Special shout out to Michael Whitely, who played anything and everything for the production. It was a great way to send our school into the brisk winter holidays!
Pajama Day was a hit - Spirit Day
Loved the energy and participation of our students on the last day of school. Even caught a few parents walking in with full pajama gear! Loved that our teachers joined in as well! Thank you to our Student Service Council Team for the idea.

Talent Showcase is coming!
This is one of my favorite events of the year as students have the opportunity to shine in ways we do not typically see at school and to exhibit/practice important life skills such as Courage and Leadership. I shared with students the details including dates, performance ideas, and group expectations. I also passed an audition form to each student to review. If your child did not gather a form and wants to participate, we have forms in the front office. Students can perform individually or as a team. There are no winners or awards for this event and in no way is this considered a contest.
Talent Showcase Philosophy: I emphasized with students that our final selected performing team will be pulling for one another from start (Auditions) to finish (performance evening). When a student or team struggles along the way or during an audition, my expectation is that we rally for that student or team. A hug, high five, supportive comment, clapping, etc. This event is 100% void of drama and negative feedback and if I see it I will provide warnings. If it continues, I will not hesitate to notify parents and dismiss the act. My goal is for my students to pull together as one. Note that this has been the norm since we began this program and both students and parents have always risen to that challenge.
Parent Role: The leader of our Talent Showcase this year is our superstar MES parent, Sibel Demirmen. She is a gifted perfromance artist and has given of her time to our children over the last several years and we are grateful. She has a team of energetic parents but if you are interested in jumping on board with our production this year, please do not hesitate to contact me. We are always looking for more support and would love to have you on the team. The only thing we ask for is for a positive vibe, a good sense of humor because there are moments, and a creative eye. We are always looking to infuse new ideas and creativity into our productions.
JANUARY 12th: Audition Forms due to the office. We have more in the office if you need another (Not to teachers)
JANUARY 18th: Mandatory Talent Showcase Auditions, 2:30pm-5:30pm (There is little reason for our team to say no to a student/team other than they have nothing at the audition. They will need your help to get things going. Later we will provide a little support and coaching but do have them come in to the audition ready with something. It does not have to be their final act. If singing or dancing, lyrics must be clean and music must be provided. More to come on this in January when we return)
FEBRUARY 26TH: Team check in for those needing extra support
MARCH 5th week: Dress Rehearsals
MARCH 8th: Talent Showcase evening

Supporting our children with allergies...
Mary Silveira Elementary is a school that prides itself on not only providing all students the finest education, but also ensuring their well-being and safety. This school year we have a number of students with food allergies some potentially life-threatening. While some children may experience a stuffy nose and watery eyes, other children develop more severe reactions. In the most severe cases, anaphylactic shock can occur within seconds of coming into contact with the nut product. Several of our children have strict guidelines in place to prevent these severe allergic reactions. This is where we need your support. We are asking for your help this year to provide all of our children with a safe school environment by considering not sending any peanut or nut containing products to school with your child. If this cannot be avoided, please remind your children not to share food with others.
On the school side, we continue to educate and remind our students that we do not share food and they have been responding well. Our school nurse has met with our teachers and instructional yard duty personnel to educate and support. We are very fortunate that our School Lunch program, Choice Lunch, is Nut Free. We thank you in advance for your understanding and consideration in helping us maintain a safe and healthy environment for all of our students. Alternative snack ideas.....
