Have a Fantastic Summer Everyone!
I want to take a moment to thank you all for your support this year! Truly, there are not enough adjectives to express our gratitude. An expression of sincere thanks goes out to all of our volunteers who spent time both inside and outside of our classrooms and supporting our staff in every way possible. Next year, one of my many personal/professional goals is to augment our school/parent connections, building a more inclusive community. To begin, I am looking at building into the schedule, morning coffee's in the front lawn area to informally chat about ideas, our children, programs, activities, and whatever comes to mind. I encourage you to join me once we set that in motion.
5th grade departing families
I am going to miss this class more than you will ever know. When I head out to the yard at recess or stop by Mrs. Nichols, Mrs. Hutchens, or Mrs. Ramirez's class in 2017, my first inclination will be to look for Sean, Sam, Grace, Cole, Sebastian, Charlotte, Zander, Alex, Anthony, and the other 60+ students who I spent so much time getting to know over the years. Each has their own unique charm, style, and class. Together they compromise one of the highest achieving classes I have worked with and are well prepared for the rigors of Middle School.
Promotion message/advice for graduating students
* Work Hard for what is worth learning is worth working hard for.
* Be Humble for while you are smart, talented, and athletic, so are a lot of other people.
* Smile often and with a purpose. You’ll be amazed at how much better the world looks – and how the world looks at you – when you have a smile on your face.
* Be courteous and respectful to all those around you. Good manners and a respectful attitude will take you far in this world.
* Get involved in activities, stay busy, and build lots of friendships. Don’t worry if you are the only one of your group of friends interested in joining a particular club or activity. If that activity truly interests you, go for it.
THANK YOU Lynette Molloy, meshsa president!
Special appreciations are extended to Lynette, our Home and School President for the last 2 years, for her warmth and unique ability to unite parents and teachers towards a common cause. At the end of this year, she wandered the halls of our school with her children, Mrs. Belair and her children, and a little red wagon, passing out summer sandals and flowers to any staff members still on campus. Any more be said?
In that same breath we welcome Cristina Bonner and Jennifer Belair, our new Co-Presidents for the 2017-2019 school years. They have already stepped in and shared new ideas and activities. Their excitement and love for "all things children" will keep Silveira moving forward in positive directions.
Thank you 5th grade parent team!
Your preparation for the Class of 2017 Promotion event was splendid! Our Board of Trustees appreciated it, our retiring Superintendent appreciated it, and our teachers and students appreciated all the work that went into making this special for our children. Special appreciations head out to the team who made this happen: Denise Roeck (Her 7 European Birch trees were a magnificent gift for our school), Alice Ostrovsky, Christine Maguire (Summer cooler rocked, thank you!), Jennifer Conway, Keli Honsberger, Lynette Molloy, Andrea Schoenwald, Danielle Dabbah, Liz McCarthy, Rod Salvador, Loren Altura, Lisa Pryor, and Karen Madden. All played a part in creating a beautiful sendoff for our children.
grade outdoor education - Alliance redwoods
For the 2017-2018 school year, we are shifting to Alliance Redwoods, a program that we are confident will more than meet the needs of our children and families. We carefully vetted this program over the last few years with teachers and administrators, visited the site, researched its instructional content, spoke with their directors, weighed the costs and benefits to our families, and shared this information with our Dixie Board of Trustees. Please click this link for a brief tour of the program!
Site Council, 2017-2018
We thank our outgoing Site Council Team, Sara Frack, Jason Ferrell, Theresa Martinez, and Erin Rudsenske, for their support over the last 2 years. I could not have asked for a more dedicated and efficient team. For the 2017-2018 school year, our ballots are in and have been counted. I am proud to announce our 4 new parent members: Liz McCarthy, Christina Ishibashi Bonner, Evan McKay, and Phil Marsh! They will join our 2 current parents, Melissa Vree, Jennifer Belair, and work alongside our site instructional team to help support our instructional and safety programs. Click here for the current site council website, which we will update in the Fall.
Student class assignments
Thank you for sending in your requests during the month of May. Our team worked thoughtfully and diligently on class assignments for next year taking into account the many Dixie District factors shared in my email sent in late April. Again, we try to support where we can but as you are aware, we are not able to support all requests. You will receive class assignments in the mail in late August. Note that we cannot accommodate requests for changes at that time and we are unable to disseminate any information on class assignments before that time. Thank you for your understanding and patience and we look forward to a stellar 2017-2018 school year!
Many of you were informed the last day of school that a few of our staff members are leaving Mary Silveira Elementary School. Retiring: Dr. Thomas Lohwasser, Superintendent Dixie District Schools, Mrs. Melissa Honig, Speech Pathologist, Mrs. Chris Kroupa, K-2 Music specialist, and Mrs. Lim, our instructional aid. We wish each of them a safe passage wherever their travels take them. We have posted the K-2 music position. If you have an interest or know of someone who is, email me.
As some of you may know, our district adopted a new Language Arts program to replace the one we have been using for close to 15 years. As such, we looked at a variety of ways to release our teachers of outdated materials. Some were given to students, others donated to groups, some unused workbooks were sold back, while some were recycled. We apologize if there were other avenues we failed to explore but wanted to let you know that we did the best we could under the circumstances.
In the future, we will work closely with our staff and district office team to provide alternative outlets for the release of materials that could be of value to other organizations. Getting books into the hands of young readers is, of course, a priority for our district. Thank you for those who have provided valuable feedback to our Dixie Team.
Staff and room changes
Kindergarten: Mrs. Madden shifts from Kindergarten to 4th grade next year. We welcome Mrs. Hooper, our new Kindergarten teacher. She will operate out of room 11, across from Mrs. Lum. With oodles of teaching experience, energy, and a sincere passion for working with children, we look forward to her immediate impact on our program. She will join Ms. Franklin, and Ms. Lum in the K wing. 3 K teachers.
First grade: Welcome Mrs. Rossini, our new 1st grade teacher. She taught 2nd grade for the last 2 years but due to our enrollment numbers, shifted to 1st grade for the 2017-2018 school year. She, too, will have an immediate impact on our instruction program. She will operate out of room 13. She joins Mrs. Charton and Mrs. Ritscher, to complete our 1st grade trio. 3 1st grade teachers.
Second grade: Mrs. Rossini shifts to 1st grade next year. Ms. Van Deusen, Mrs. Jones, and Ms. Presson continue to anchor this team. Mrs. Jones will shift to room 1 behind the front office, while Mrs. Presson will shift to room 10 in the Kindergarten wing. 3 2nd grade teachers.
Third grade: This team remains unchanged. Mrs. Case, Mrs Hu, Mrs. Digirolamo, and Ms. Palmer, continue to anchor our 3rd grade program and will operate out of their same rooms. 4 3rd grade teachers.
Fourth grade: Welcome Mrs. Madden. She taught Kindergarten for several year and has expressed a sincere interest in exploring other grades to build her understanding of the whole child. She joins Mr. Malaret and Mrs. Tanner to complete this 4th grade trio. 3 4th grade teachers.
Fifth grade: Mrs. Hutchens shifts from a combination class to a straight 5th grade class. She joins Mrs. Ramirez, and Mrs. Nichols to complete this 5th grade trio. 3 5th grade teachers.
Finally, on behalf of our staff and myself, I want to thank your for the special and personal gifts you generously provided us at the end of the year. They were not necessary, but deeply appreciated!
A final thank you to all of our families who thoughtfully contributed to our Can Do! Family Giving Campaign this year. Your support for these "targeted" programs has been instrumental in providing our students a rich tapestry of learning experiences throughout the year. From Art and Technology, to Physical Education, K-2 Music and our school garden, you have provided a gift. Next year I look forward to supporting everyone in our community to lend their financial support so we can continue to enrich the lives of all of our children.
I wish you all a fantastic summer full of laughter and continuous learning!
See you in August - Principal Anderson!
